Mastering the Art of Design for Team Canada Kendo

StudioTPM was proud to design the national uniform for Team Canada Kendo.

The Brand

Kendo means “The way of the sword” and refers to the art of traditional Japanese fencing that was originally developed by Samurai. Today, it is widely practiced within Japan and in many other nations across the world, including Canada.

Every three years, Team Canada Kendo has an opportunity to represent the nation at the World Kendo Championships—an international Kendo competition hosted by the member nations of the International Kendo Federation. To demonstrate their skills in the most professional manner on the world stage, Team Canada Kendo contacted StudioTPM to help them with a new uniform design.

The StudioTPM team did an incredible job capturing the identity of our national team. Armed with their striking new uniforms, our Team Canada Kendo players took the world stage feeling proud, well represented, and ready to fight.

Dressing for Battle on the World Stage

The traditional Kendo uniform comprises a mask, armor, and a tenugui—a cloth that is wrapped around the head to provide additional padding and sweat absorption beneath the helmet. “The tenugui design is particularly important as it represents a key part of the team’s unique history,” said Ray Murao, GM of Team Canada Kendo. “StudioTPM nailed the design of our new tenugui—we love it.”

StudioTPM designed these elements using bright, bold red to signify the Canadian national identity. The words “Heart and Duty” were displayed front and center beside the team’s logo, which incorporates a Kendo player’s mask within the Canadian maple leaf. Each of the design elements represents the team’s national pride while honoring the storied history and tradition of the Kendo practice. “The StudioTPM team did an incredible job capturing the identity of our national team. Armed with their striking new uniforms, our Team Canada Kendo players took the world stage feeling proud, well represented, and ready to fight,” said Ray Murao, GM of Team Canada Kendo
